ANNA VOGEL
CIVITAS
07/05/–14/07/2018

Anna Vogel will present new developments of the series “New Cities” 2017/2018 and the first works of her new series “Cities” and “Temples”.

Participations in a string of curated museum-based shows immediately followed her graduation as Andreas Gursky’s Master Student. These include State of the Art – New Contemporary Photography, NRW Forum, Düsseldorf (2012); The Vordemberge-Gildewart Art Stipend, ium KIT Kunst im Tunnel, Düsseldorf (2014); Harmonie und Umbruch, MARTA Herford and Die Idee der Landschaft, DZ Bank Kunstsammlung, Frankfurt (both 2015); Bernd, Hilla and the Others. Photography from Düsseldorf, Huis Marseille, Amsterdam, NL, and Jenseits des Sichtbaren. Fotografische Erzählung als Spur, Museum für Photographie, Braunschweig (both 2018).

She has established herself as one of the most prominent artists to emerge from Andreas Gursky’s class and has perpetuated the tradition of photo-based art practiced by the so-called Becher School in a highly distinctive manner. For her recent show “Civitas” in the gallery until July 2018, she has further developed her series “New Cities” and she presents her new series “Temples”, all unique works based on the technique of drawing fine lines of ink onto photomontages . The photographic images are subject to a process of multi-layered reworking. On the final pigment print a layer of hand drawn fine lines in ink is added until the motif begins to oscillate in a kind of suspended animation.
