We are delighted to present Luzia Simons’ multifaceted works for the first time in a solo exhibition at our Berlin gallery in Charlottenburg in June 2024. The show includes photo-based works from her best-known group of works “Stockage”, a wall-filling tapestry and watercolors that have never been shown before.

Luzia Simons, born in 1953 in Quixadá, Brazil, first studied history at the University of Paris VIII and then fine arts at the Sorbonne from 1984 to 1986. She lives in Berlin. Her works are represented in important national and international art collections.

With the continuously developing series “Stockage”, Luzia became a pioneer of the scannogram. As in the still lifes of the Dutch Baroque paintings, Simons thematizes the inexhaustibility of splendour and transience using the frequently recurring motif of the tulip in her works, which has a long, eventful history both as a Central Asian wild plant and its Western European offspring as a European cultivated plant, and in the artist’s work stands as a metaphor for intercultural identity, which also shapes the life of the Brazilian artist, who lives in Paris and now lives in Berlin. The wall tapestry “Tendenz endlos” was also embroidered with ornamental abstractions, alluding to the information networks of underground mycelium. Numerous people connected to the artist have worked with her to connect the longitudinal panels of the tapestry using hand-embroidered criss-cross interventions. “An almost endless process of expansion unfolds in ever new energy clusters, functional strategies, tensions and rhythms, growth and destruction at the same time. It is the encroachments that thematize the boundaries.” (Quote: Werner Knoedgen) In her watercolors, Simons analytically assembles – often systematically arranged in rows – diverse form and color variations of different petals, which appear abstract and lyrical at the same time in their almost dissected isolation.
